Fall Cleanup in Rhode Island: What to Clear Before Winter

A useful fall cleanup clears the areas that need attention while preserving healthy garden habitat. For Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts property owners, the goal is to prepare lawns, beds and access routes for winter—not simply remove every leaf.

Start with the lawn and walking routes

Check where leaves collect after wind and rain. Thick, matted piles on turf need attention; leaves on steps and paths should be cleared to keep access usable. Note branches, loose debris and objects that could disappear under snow.

A light layer of leaves can be mulched into turf. Garden beds can retain suitable leaves as mulch and wildlife shelter. The right approach depends on the amount of material and how the space is used. UNH Extension explains the benefits of keeping some leaves on site in its guide to leaves and wildlife.

Separate routine cleanup from repair work

A cleanup quote should identify the lawn, beds, paths and disposal areas included. Ask whether shrub trimming, weeding, hauling and final mowing are part of the scope. Dead plants, damaged edging, drainage concerns and lawn renovation may need separate work.

Do not assume all shrubs should be cut back in fall. Identify the plant and the goal before pruning. A maintenance visit is a good opportunity to flag questions rather than cut every plant to the same height.

Make a simple winter access plan

Walk the driveway and paths before the ground is covered. Identify garden edges, low walls, steps and outdoor fixtures. Choose places where snow can be stored without blocking entrances or burying sensitive plants. If you need professional help, arrange a property review before the first storm.
